Summary:Climate Patterns

There are many different kinds of climates throughout the world. These climates are tropical, dry, high latitude, midlatitude, and highland. The dry climates occur in lowlatitudes and midlatitudes. There are two types of dry climates, determined by amount of vegetation. One of the two dry climates is called a desert. Deserts are a dry region that has a lot of vegetation. The yearly rainfall is about 10 inches. The other type of dry climate is a steppe, treeless grasslands that surround deserts. Unlike the desert, the steppe has a yearly rainfall of 20 inches.

There are two types of tropical climate, dry and wet tropical climates. These climates are found in the tropics, or lowlatitudes. Tropical wet climates have warm, humid air. Due to the humidity, it rains nearly every day. Yearly rain fall is about 80 inches. The rainfall tends to draw nutrients out of the ground, resulting in abundant wildlife. The other tropical climate, the dry tropical climate, has dry winters, opposed to the summers, which are wet. Dry tropical climates are also called Savannas, and are a type of grassland.

Midlatitude climates have a variety of plant life. The types of midlatitude climates include coniferous forests, deciduous forests, and prairies. They have rainy winters and hot summers.

High latitude climates have very low temperatures. In the subarctic, plant life is very limited, and most of the soil is permanently frozen in what is called permafrost. However, during the short summers, evergreens are able to grow. Tundra is even colder than the subarctic, and the few vegetation that grows are small bushes and grass.
